Go ahead and enter your flowers into a flower show! You just might be surprised at how well you do at the show. Today at our SADS (San Antonio Daylily Society) meeting, our speaker Marilyn Greenlee showed us how to groom our flowers for the upcoming SADS Daylily Flower Show (May 9th at the Garden Center in San Antonio, 1:00 – 4:00). It really isn’t all that hard. It is mainly taking the time to use some tricks of the trade – like brushing off the little bugs – the little itty-bitty spiders with a make up brush, or using a straw to blow the pollen off of the petal. You also don’t have to be a member of the club to enter your flowers at the show!
If you have never been to a flower show (and plant sale), it really is a lot of fun. You get to see over a 100 different flowers, in this case daylilies, all in one room. These are typically first blooms and create just a wonderful backdrop. You also get to see the different types of flowers, such as doubles, spiders, and unusual forms. In addition, we have a foral design contest which is always surprising to see the creativity that the designers come up with for the overall theme (this year is daylilies in concert). There is always an education area where experienced members can answer your questions about daylilies, and we usually present some seminars for the public as well. On top of all that, the club sells specialty daylilies at very reasonable prices as their main fundraiser. You should get there early in the afternoon, because some of the cultivars sell out within a couple of hours.
